Jimmy Roberts, the excellent reporter for ESPN, ABC, and NBC, just released a very good book called “Breaking the Slump: How Great Players Survived Their Darkest Moments in Golf – and What You Can Learn From Them”. The book explores the ‘panicked’ state that all of us golfers have experienced when we just seem to lose our swing and are pushed to the brink of giving the game up.
“Breaking the Slump” is written from a golfer’s perspective (Roberts) who also happens to have access to some of the greatest golfers in the world…along with other golfer celebrities. Roberts does a great job of bringing interesting stories to life in a way that resonates with every golfer. We get a chance to see the more human side of the machine-like professionals when they face some of their darkest golfing moments.
We get the chance to hear from Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Greg Norman. There is also a great opening chapter with Paul Azinger – who experienced ‘slumps’ of battling cancer and losing his dear friend Payne Stewart before bouncing back to win again on the tour and recently leading the United States to a Ryder Cup victory in 2008. Other tour players featured include Tom Watson, Hal Sutton, Peter Jacobson, Mark Calcavecchia, and David Duval. As Roberts says, this book is for the two kinds of golfers in this world: those who’ve suffered a debiliating slump and those who will suffer one in the future.
This is Robert’s first book but you’ll find that he’s is not just a fantastic golf reporter – he’s also an excellent writer. The book is an easy and entertaining read. I highly recommend it for golfers of all skill levels. The stories are great and the personalities are very, very interesting.
